NEED FOR NEW HOUSING IN VILLAGE

HouseOpinion in the village was almost equally divided between those wanting no extra housing and those accepting the need for more.

60% of those asking for more wanted such new housing to be solely for the benefit of local people and 38% wanted Housing Association Lettings. 43% thought that acceptable housing would be best served by barn conversions and 36% would prefer single building infilling. In Question 9, 28% said NO new houses would be acceptable whereas in Question 8, 48% said there was no need for extra housing. The only comment made was by someone wishing to abandon the distinction between holiday lets and full residential purposes, with market needs deciding the use.

ADULT EDUCATION

Computer Teaching

73 people expressed a wish to attend evening classes in the village and 31 said they would attend day classes. The most popular choice was new technology/computing classes (42 people). 35 wanted art/craft lessons and 18 wanted languages.

Apart from the above 25 different activities were requested for day or evening classes. Of these only yoga and car mechanics were requested more than once. (Presumably people meant lessons in car maintenance).

Recommendation: Pass this information to Adult Education.

HEALTH & SOCIAL SERVICES

Opinion of services is mainly good, with the District Nurse being rated as good by 94% (30 people), and Loan of Medical Equipment by 93% (13); the one person voicing an opinion on Day Care rated it as good.

Medical BagThe Doctor, Mental Health, Emergency Ambulance, Hospital Transport, Maternity Care and Respite Care were rated as good by between 80-89%;

The Health Visitor, Chiropodist and Other Medical Facility were also generally rated as good or reasonable.

However, the Dentists were rated as poor by 27% (15 people).

Most services were generally accessible to most people, but difficulties were identified in visiting the Dentist (24%, 19), Hospital (12%, 9) and the Doctor (10%, 11).

20 people say there are special services for the elderly which need improvement

  • More opportunities to go to day centres
  • Regular attention by District Nurse/Care Manager
  • Free therapy e.g. counselling

And the most common request was for more and better public transport to be able to do the above and meet essential needs.

Recommendation: Pass this information the Health and Social Services.

VILLAGE SHOP

The appraisal questions for the village shop are somewhat academic because, at the time the questionnaire went out, the shop was about to re-open. Hopefully, it will be a thriving shop and post office (due to open in May) as 96% of those who returned the appraisal questionnaire felt a definite need for a shop.

Statistics from the appraisal may be useful in the future, should capital input or time be needed in any way. Another interesting finding was that 18% (21 people) would be prepared to pay in advance, and therefore help cash flow should the need ever arise.
