Battisborough Cross playing fields

There was overwhelming support to retain the playing fields for community use for sport and recreational facilities with 118 people answering yes to retain all of the area and 88 to retain part of the area. A full list of suggestions for the use of the area has been passed on the Croquet & Pétanque Club.

Offers of help

55 people offered time, 28 money, and 12 both time and money to maintain the area.

Traffic & Transport

Traffic

The main concerns in the parish were with parking and the speed of traffic, both in Holbeton and Battisborough Cross.

‘Traffic calming in the village’

There are 281 vehicles in these 175 households, 22 households have no car and 63 households have one car.

Two-thirds of the 281 vehicles identified in the survey are used for journeys to work or education outside the parish. Hence the traffic peaks early morning and mid to late afternoon.

Parking

288 (85%) respondents reported having adequate parking space on their property. Nevertheless, the remaining 53 have to street park their vehicles. It is therefore understandable that two-thirds of you think that the parking is inadequate and detrimental to road safety.

The favoured solution is a second car park (64%, 211) and the suggestions focused on three main places:

  1. The allotment adjacent to the school;
  2. Minchinhay field below Church Hill House;
  3. The Vicarage Hill site which has already been offered on a lease by the Flete Estate.

‘Builders yard on Fore Street’

Action: The full list of suggestions for sites has been passed on to the Parish Council.

Danger spots

This question attracted nearly 200 comments identifying a multitude of sites.

The largest concerns were as follows:

  • Speeding CarSpeeding cars through the narrow lanes
  • The junction outside the village shop
  • Church Hill
  • Fore Street
  • Vicarage Hill
  • The Square and outside the School
  • Speeding through Battisborough Cross
  • Exit from Flete on the A379

‘Some traffic goes through Battisborough Cross much too fast’
‘The only thing that makes a road dangerous is the speed at which people drive’
‘Junctions by the village shop and the school’

Action: Lowering the speed limit in the parish must be seriously considered.

The full "danger-spots" list has also been passed on to the Parish Council.
