TEIGN VILLAGE FACILITIES

81 people would use a shop and 94 would use a Post Office at least once a week. There is a newly opened shop and Post Office in Hennock who will probably deliver groceries to houses in Teign Village, possibly for a small charge.

Involvement and interest in Allotments is already thriving in Teign Village, and there is little support for any more. Nor is there support for a meeting room or village office.

HENNOCK FACILITIES

142 people would use a shop and a Post Office at least once a week and only a very few would never use it. Since the appraisal questionnaire was planned, the shop and Post Office is now up and running. It is well stocked with good quality products, excellent dairy produce and many fresh vegetables. The shop and Post Office are a valuable facility so we must all support this venture as much as possible. A request has been made for shop opening hours to include non-working days, and it now opens for a period on Saturday and Sunday.

As at Teign Village, there was almost no interest in allotments or a meeting room. However, 26 people would use a Village Office at least weekly, and 37 monthly.

Recommendations:

  1. That the Village Hall Committee considers the provision of a Village Office within the hall.
  2. COMMUNITY MARKET

This appears to have excited the imagination! 233 people (84%) would use one, 22 would help set it up, 32 help run it, 38 help fundraise and 60 would donate funds. This would be ideal for those wishing to sell their own produce and many people would surely welcome the chance to buy fresh, locally grown produce, cakes, bread, crafts, knitting etc.

    Recommendation:

  3. That those interested run a community Market on a trial basis for a period to assess the viability of such a project before making it a regular feature.
  4. CAR SHARING SCHEME

Although the majority would not want to be involved, 46 would provide transport and 32 would use the facility, so it could be worth setting up in a small way.

    Recommendation:

  5. That those interested set up a car-sharing scheme.
  6. HENNOCK VILLAGE HALL

There is mixed reaction to the adequacy of the hall. Of the 186 who had an opinion, 47% consider it adequate, 53% do not. If it were improved, 95 people would use it at least once a month.

Plans have been drawn up for considerable improvements to the hall. Many fund raising events have taken place to raise equivalent funds to match grant applications. The hall appears at the moment to be adequate for events such as the Garden Club and the History Group. However, the kitchen is not of a high enough standard to allow the preparation of food, so even Coffee Mornings pose a problem. It could never be used for any sort of community meal that required cooking or re-heating on the premises. If it were to be used for any form of youth activity or any evening classes or training, then improvements would have to be made. There are also restrictive covenants on the property and these limit the options that can be considered.

Made larger, better kitchen & toilets

Parking facilities for those who wish to use the hall

Kitchen & toilet facilities need modernising

    Needs modernising and extending

Poor state altogether - needs upgrading

    More visually acceptable

    Better disabled access

    Recommendations:

  7. That the committee take note of the suggestions made for improving the hall when deciding on the scope of the project
  8. That the Village Hall Committee ensures that all are aware of the options and decisions involved in the Hall project and its associated works.
  9. PUBLIC HOUSE

This is clearly important to the community - 233 people, 82% said so. However, not all comments were positive and they have all been copied to the landlord for his attention.

    - should be doing food and coffees, holiday guests.

State of the exterior is not very welcoming

    RELIGION

At 73% there is a very high percentage of people who feel that a place of worship is important to village life. Most stress its importance for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals, as a historic building and as a focus for village life. Only 71 people (28%) felt it important for Sunday Worship. Regarding other uses for the church, the greater support was for choral concerts (62%) with 27% preferring it to be used for no other functions. Comments made indicate a feeling that the school should use the church more, maybe at harvest or Christmas time

    Recommendation:

  10. That this information be passed to the new vicar for his consideration and discussion with parishioners.
