EDUCATION

A large number of people would be interested in attending Adult Education Classes. The majority interest was for Computing & IT, but interest was also shown in Art and in Languages. Most people would like the use of the school facilities, and almost all would be prepared to pay for its use.

A number of comments specific to Hennock CP School were made under this section. This is outside the scope of the appraisal, but those comments have been passed to the school to be dealt with as they see fit.

Mechanics courses for teenagers so they can repair own cars or bikes, so they can live in Hennock on a low income and not leave when they grow up

Recommendation:

  1. That those interested liaise with the Local Education Authority to set up an evening class for a topic in which they are interested and can obtain support.

60% of those with an opinion said that Dog Mess is a problem in the community.

Hedgerows in both parishes are never cut when needed…Road gritting in the winter is non-existent

I would like to see an area safe from traffic where dogs may be exercised. Dog bins would be an essential feature.

    AREAS NEEDING VISUAL IMPROVEMENT

Top billing goes to Road Park, which was named 16 times in terms of the car park, its railings, the pavement, and the other side of the road. The central ‘Village Square’ comes a close second (outside of the pub mentioned 13 times and the Village Hall mentioned 6 times). These are the areas with the greatest need for tidying up. Also scoring highly were overgrown hedges (4), parking in general (4),

Five Lanes (2), and the area between Five Lanes and Newhouses (3). 30 different sites in Hennock were identified: in Teign Village, 7 sites were mentioned, but none more than once.

These will all be displayed at the meeting on November 25th.

    Recommendations:

  3. That the District Council improve its services which adversely affect the quality of cleanliness and safety in this community.
  4. That the Parish Council takes adequate steps to minimise dog fouling, and if necessary engage the services of Teignbridge Dog Warden.
  5. That the sites identified as ‘eyesores’ be tidied and better maintained.
  6. COMMUNITY FACILITIES

A small number of people have problems collecting medicine on prescription. The response to a possible part-time surgery was very positive; 222 people, 93% would use a Doctor’s surgery and the services of a District Nurse would be used by 54, Health Visitor by 27 and a Chiropodist by 46. This facility could be of use where there is a need (for example) for regular blood pressure checks.

Good Neighbour scheme: of the 269 people who answered this question, 33 would offer services weekly, 28 monthly and 120 less often. Who would use the service? Of the 257 who answered, only 25 in Hennock, 7 in Teign Village, but 10 in the outlying areas. We must consider that some of these may be elderly and in need of the occasional transport. A small need but a very important one with what could be a viable solution.

There appears to already be an ‘unwritten’ Good Neighbour Scheme within our community. Most people already know friends and neighbours only too willing to help on the occasion of need. It might however be useful to compile a list of car owners who would be willing to give their services, if available at a given time, for attendance at hospital or for journeys of such importance.

    Recommendations:

  7. That the Parish Council negotiates with local surgeries to secure the services of a Doctor, District Nurse, Health Visitor and Chiropodist within the community.
  8. To seek a volunteer who will compile a list of drivers who, even if only available occasionally, would offer transport for those who may need it.
