HENNOCK & TEIGN VILLAGE
APPRAISAL REPORT, 1999
INTRODUCTION
Earlier this year the Village Hall Committee initiated an Appraisal, to give people the opportunity to say how they want the community to develop. The survey was designed and administered by a small Steering Group who sought the views of others in trying to identify issues to be addressed by Parish, District and County Councils.
The survey is now complete.
Thank you to all the residents of Hennock and Teign Village who responded: 133 households replied to the 184 questionnaires delivered, representing an excellent 72% return. This report provides a summary of the results, together with recommendations, and will form an agenda for our community over the next 5-10 years
|
The next step will be to discuss the recommendations at a public meeting to be held in the Village Hall on Thursday November 25th 1999 at 7.30 pm. |
The final outcome of the Appraisal will probably affect everyone who lives here, so it is important that this meeting involves as many people as possible, and becomes more than just a ‘talk’ session. Things can only be changed if we ourselves, the people of Hennock and Teign Village, choose to do so. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to solve everything on our own: there are agencies and organisations that can do a lot for us if we only talk to them. One of the objectives for the public meeting will be to look at the help that we can draw on and how we can use it effectively.
Your interest and support is vital if our community is to improve. We hope that you will find this report interesting and thought provoking, and look forward to seeing you on 25th.
Finally, a big ‘Thank You’ to
for their financial and moral support throughout the appraisal process

PEOPLE

A total of 349 people live in the 133 households who responded. Most households were in Hennock (55%) with 25% in Teign Village and the remaining 20% living in the outlying areas.
Most households have two people, but there are twenty who live on their own.
Looking at broad age ranges there are 46 children aged up to ten, who will become tomorrow’s teenagers. At present 21% of the community is under sixteen while 16% is over sixty.
15 children attend nursery school; 28 attend primary and 25 secondary school.
Only those aged 11 and over were asked to complete the survey and a total of 294 responded. As expected, the numbers of men and women in each age range was very close except in the 17-21 range where twice as many men responded (8 men, 4 women) and in the over-75 range where unusually, there are only two women to six men.

ALL your comments will be on display at the meeting on 25th November, and will also be passed on to the Parish Council.
HOUSING
88% have an opinion on this, with 41% wanting housing for local people and 31% for young people. A significant proportion (26%) feels that no housing is needed. When asked what type of housing is needed, 34% would prefer Owner Occupied; 30% District Council Rented, and 10% Private rented, while 32% feel that no type of housing is needed. When the question becomes more specific, 24% want housing to increase by up to ten houses and 37% want no increase over the next ten years. Considering what development is acceptable, most (35%) say "None" with 29% happy with single infilling; 24% with small group infills and 23% who would accept expansion on the edge of the built-up area.
Please don’t create new buildings as there are perfectly good old buildings to use. Don’t make this beautiful village a little town.
Recommendation:

EMPLOYMENT
By a ten to one majority, people would like to see more jobs become available (63%), while around one-third have no opinion. Clearly the most acceptable employment would be in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (69%), but 37% would also like to see opportunities in Repairs & Light Industry and in the Hotel & Catering trades.
Of those with an opinion on encouraging tourism, a small majority (57%) would like more. Only the development of B&B (82%) and Guest House (61%) opportunities found majority favour: all other options were in a clear minority.
