Introduction

Following a public meeting in Summer 1997, Hemyock Parish Council (supported by the Community Council of Devon) decided to initiate a parish appraisal. The aim was to give everyone in the parish a chance to say how they would like to see Hemyock develop over the years ahead by identifying and discussing issues of local concern. An appraisal steering group was formed and following much discussion a questionnaire was distributed to every household in the parish in 1998.

In total 295 households (44%) completed their surveys, representing 654 people. This report summarises the responses of these households. A full copy of the data is available from the Parish Council if anyone wishes to look at this in more detail.

Thank you to all those residents who completed their surveys – it has given the Parish Council a good idea of what residents think on a variety of issues.

Hemyock is an expanding, vibrant and exciting place to live. We all share in the rural and village life spirit - we all have witnessed and participated in the many events, productions, markets and fairs staged by various organisations and bodies throughout the year. This appraisal goes some way to give ammunition to your Parish Council in their quest for more power and influence at higher levels in order to gain for the village what you, the residents, wish.

The interpretation of data from this appraisal has been most interesting and valuable. It has tidied up many loose ends and has given the quieter members of our community a chance to "voice" their opinions.

I hope the evidence collated will benefit the parish in our quest for better services, more recognition and increased awareness of each others thoughts and opinions.

We hope to do an update on the appraisal in a couple of years time, to take note of any changes in the needs of residents.
