Hartland Parish Appraisal 1997

Health and Social Services

Generally all the medical services received a good report. Day care and the health visitor were the exception. 54% of users thought the health visitor service poor and day care received a 35% poor rating, although these were used by relatively few people,

Getting to the NHS dentist was often or occasionally difficult for 192 people, ie. 50% of users.

67% thought Hartland needed a residential home. There are 50 registered disabled people in the village.

Emergency

The fire service gets a good report, the ambulance service a reasonable report but the police service is thought to be poor (43%). Many back page writers expressed the view that they would like to see a greater police presence in the village, especially to control cars speeding through Fore Street and parking on double yellow lines.

Retail Services

Most people like to shop in the village so they can support local shops (75%). Last minute items are those most usually bought. Those people shopping outside the village do so because of cheaper prices (74%) and greater choice (85%). A minority of back pagers expressed a desire for a small supermarket and for co-operatives which would sell organic goods.

Within the questionnaire there were repeated requests made for the establishment of a good cafe/restaurant/bistro in the village.

Sport and Social

The Parish Hall is the most used facility in the village by 524 people, most occasionally. All the other facilities, with the exception of St. John's, are used by 200 to 300 people. Swimming is a popular pursuit with 46% of people either often or occasionally visiting a swimming pool. The back pages have a number of requests for this facility to be provided in the parish.

The lack of facilities for the Youth were keenly made and a Youth Club would be supported by 34% of respondents of all ages but more interestingly 7 people are prepared to organise the facility.

Both local indoor and outdoor facilities for sport were regarded as poor for all ages with indoor facilities for the over sixties being the worst.
