Danger spots on Feniton roads

69% of people who responded to this question identified danger spots on Feniton's roads. The main roads entering the village were thought to be dangerous e.g. near the stables and from the old village to the new village. Also speeding along Station Road. Many commented that they would like to see traffic calming measures installed. Parking on or near junctions was also seen as a problem. There was such a long list of areas mentioned that we cannot record them all separately in this report. It is hoped that once the next public meeting has taken place, people who feel strongly on this issue will form a transport group to help tackle the problems.

Employment

47% of people are employed, 27% are wholly retired. A good number of people are self-employed, a few are on maternity leave, and a small percentage of respondents do voluntary work.

Childcare facilities were felt to be too expensive by 18 people, and 25 people were not aware of childcare facilities.

Health & Social Services

Most services were seen to be good. 75% were pleased with services provided by both the doctor and health visitor, 3% thought they were poor. 70% were happy with services provided by the dentist and district nurse. Amongst the services seen as poor were Meals on Wheels with 30% not happy with the service, although this was based on relatively few users.

Sports, Social & Entertainment

About half of those answering this question feel that local outdoor sports facilities are good/reasonable. The other half considered them poor for all age groups, particularly for under 25's - and worse for women.

Well over half would like to join in sports and hobbies, and a significant number would be prepared to help organise them. Most popular would be aerobics/keep fit, badminton, tennis, dance, gardening, and sport - with up to 200 wanting to take part in aerobics.

A new sports pavilion is top of most people's list (64%, 418 people), as the best place to hold groups, with the Youth Centre coming second (25%, 165 people).

390 people (77%) said there should be more sports facilities for girls.

Youth Activities & Youth Club

34 people attend Youth Club - 12 go every week and 22 attend sometimes. If the Youth Club were open more often, 22 would attend weekly and 54 sometimes

356 people answered the question about Youth Club sessions for different age groups. 72% would like to see sessions for 13 - 16's, 69% for 16+, 66% for 9 - 13's, 57% for 6 - 8's.

550 people answered the question about a full time Youth Worker, and an overwhelming 86% said Yes! They would like to see one established in Feniton.

There were many suggestions of other facilities for young people needed in Feniton. The majority fall into one of the following categories:

The social activities mentioned appear to be meeting real needs in those who use them:

35 each at Cubs and Brownies
26 at Toddlers
43 would like a holiday playscheme
40 an after-school club

Opinion on the children's playground is generally that the facilities here are poor, and need substantial improvement (48%, 314).

Crime & Safety

More than 90% of people answered the question 'What activities would help reduce crime in Feniton'? 77% of them thought more frequent police patrols would be helpful. 56% favoured a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. The need for parents to take more responsibility for their children was a recurring theme.

Neighbourhood Watch

501 people answered this question. 234 would join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

Information &Communications

Most think the amount of information about what is going on in the village is reasonable (49%) or poor (36%).
Key sources of information are the Parish Magazine (66%), word of mouth (52%), local papers and noticeboards (43%) each.

74% (559 people) think a welcome pack for newcomers would be useful

Services

79% (606 people) do their shopping both in and out of the village. 53 people usually shop only in the village. Most people shop in the village either because they need something at the last minute (70%), or to support local shops (63%). Others do it to save time or transport, or for the social contact. 55 people shop locally because they have no transport to go elsewhere.

384 people use the Post Office for postal services, and 183 use it for pensions and allowances. 156 use it for Car Tax, TV Licence and other bills. 131 people use the counter service at the Post Office more than five times a month. 102 people have difficulty getting to the Feniton Post Office. A number of comments suggest that some people choose not to use the Post Office for a variety of reasons.

Emergency, Environment & Other Services

Refuse Collection
This is considered to be good by 528 residents answering this question, which is (70%). 200 people thought it reasonable with only 21 people believing the service to be poor.

Road Maintenance and Road Cleaning
The majority 449 people (61%) and 573 people (77%) respectively, think these services are good/reasonable, with 255 (35%) people and 132 (18%) people respectively having the opinion that these services are poor.

Verge Maintenance
412 (56%) people thought this service to be good or reasonable, with 302 (41%) people regarding it as poor.

Street Lighting
301 people think the street lighting is good in Feniton, and 300 people regard it as being reasonable. 113 residents believe it to be poor. 491 people would like to see it improved.

Drainage
374 (53%) regarded drainage as good or reasonable and 235 (33%) think it poor.
102 have no opinion on drainage at all.

Litter Bins, Police Coverage and Recycling amenities
These have all been highlighted as poor by the majority of householders.

* Since the appraisal was delivered, recycling boxes have been delivered to the majority of households in Feniton, to be collected fortnightly.

Telephone Kiosk Reliability
265 people (39%) think it good/reasonable with 48 people (7%) regarding it as poor. 373 people (54%) have no opinion on this service.

Post Boxes
286 people voted post boxes as good, 354 residents regarded them as reasonable. 95 people think the post boxes are poor, or have no opinion.

Religion

Out of 768 respondents to this question. 415 (54%) think it important to have a 'Place of Worship' in the village.

Out of 783 people answering this question, 237 attend once a year or more of which 76 attend once a month or more.

100 people attend a church elsewhere.

216 residents reckon they see their local minister often enough, whereas 150 would like to see the minister more often, and 371 have no opinion.

Millenium

425 out of 752 respondents would like to adopt a Millennium project.

214 would like a Celebration Day and an equal number would like parties.

A woodland walk named after the Millennium was highlighted by 153 people, with a tree-planting day being chosen by 144 people.

The Time Capsule had 45 respondees.
The Parish Map/Book was liked by 84 residents.
It is heart-warming to see 294 folk are willing to contribute time and/or money towards a Millennium Appeal.

Adopt a village in the Third World
Exhibition of art and craftwork by local people on their view of feniton in the Year 2000

Reinstate the Tennis courts
Fireworks
Astroturf spare pitch for football, hockey etc.
Sports Hall
Build an indoor skate park
Create a car-free pedestrian/cycle link to Old Feniton
Fund a transport scheme such as Ring and Ride
