DITTISHAM PARISH APPRAISAL

Introduction

The Dittisham Parish Appraisal questionnaire was delivered to 183 households on the Electoral roll. 69% of questionnaires were returned from 126 households containing 286 people. As the survey took place in the winter of 1998 these were, therefore, mainly permanent residents (97%) and not second home owners.

The steering committee of Madeleine Parkinson, Jill Stevens, Diane Fletcher, Adam Milton, Duncan Green and Celia Nash worked hard over several months to get a balanced selection of questions included in the appraisal and thanks are due to them for all their efforts and the time they have given up.

Thanks are also due to the Parish Council, South Hams District Council, Devon County Council and the European Regional Development Fund for contributing to the costs, and to the Community Council of Devon for helping the committee through the appraisal process.

This report provides a summary of the results and what you consider the important issues that affect your Parish. Most of the issues included in the appraisal attracted a high level of support, but those that only a few people answered are equally as important as they are probably most in need of the services they have identified.

Recommendations that have arisen from the appraisal are listed at the end of the report.

Throughout the report numbers refer to the total of residents responding to the question.

Households

In the 126 households that responded to the questionnaire it was found that 20% had one occupant, 60% had two occupants, 5% had three and only 15% had 4 people or more. 10 respondents were not permanent residents of the Parish.

The village has a slightly ageing population with 76% of the residents from responding households aged over 40 and only 19 people between 11 and 21. 51% of these are female and 49% male. 16 children from the parish attend Blackawton Primary School, 5 go to Dartmouth Community College, 4 to KEVICCS, 2 to Churston Grammar, 2 to South Devon College and 4 elsewhere.

Housing Needs in the Parish

It was identified that three people are in need of alternative accommodation in the next 3 years, one in the next 4 - 10 years, the main need being for starter homes.

Although 66 people saw no need for any more housing, most of us want housing for local people, young people and low-income families. Nearly half of us want houses to be built for sale restricted to local people.

Health & Social Services

Most medical services got a good report, although the few people who responded that services were poor were maybe the ones that use them the most,

  • 41 people often or occasionally have difficulty getting to the dentist
  • 37 people often or occasionally have difficulty getting to the doctor
  • 34 people often or occasionally have difficulty getting to the chemist
  • 16 people often or occasionally have difficulty getting to the opticians
  • 14 people often or occasionally have difficulty collecting prescriptions

  • A need for a new surgery was seen by 92 people

  • 120 people were interested in a First Aid Course
