THE ENVIRONMENT AND OTHER SERVICES

Public Services and Standards

Refuse collection gets top billing! This service is seen by 91% of respondents to be good /reasonable.

Maintenance of the Parish’s roads, verges and footpaths was considered to be reasonable or good.

However, of the 191 respondents who expressed an opinion regarding the maintenance of the Green Lanes:

  • 8% thought the maintenance was good.
  • 50% thought the maintenance was reasonable.
  • 42% thought the maintenance was poor.

"Too much mud/dung on the roads from farm vehicles - contra to local laws - accidents - fines"

Recommendation

The Parish Council to assess and then monitor the state of Green Lanes, suggesting remedial action where required to Landowner/District Council.

Generally, people were content with the maintenance of hedges and verges etc., however, the resulting waste that is produced causes a problem. Of the 222 respondents who expressed concern over road cleaning:

  • 44% think the service poor.
  • 45% think the winter weather service poor.

"Poor maintenance of drains – too much flooding of roads"

Recommendation

The Parish Council to pass concerns to District/County Councils – noting the concern that in rural areas ‘traditional’ road sweepers can potentially put more mud on to the roads than they remove.

Voluntary Work

Although there was not much enthusiasm for entering the ‘Best Kept Village’ competition:

  • 24% in favour.
  • 34% against.
  • 42% had no opinion.

However, 136 people have said they are keen to improve the overall tidiness /appearance of the Parish.

Recommendation

To initiate a Parish ‘Clean Up Day’. Parish to liaise with District Council to a provide skip, and more litter bins.

In the Parish there are:

  • 55 people who already perform some form of voluntary work.
  • 33 people have specifically said they would help to provide a volunteer transport service.
  • 51 people said they would use this type of service occasionally.

Recommendation

To establish a Parish Volunteer Network of the people who said they would provide and use such a transport service.

Trees

The overriding response from this question was that single trees and small plantations ought to be preserved, over 80% of respondents with an opinion consider this to be either very important or ‘worth doing’. Surprisingly, 76 people consider the Millennium Wood to be ‘worth doing’; 71 people consider it to be not necessary.

Recommendation

The Parish Council to closely monitor any development that could impact on existing trees and encourage landowners to preserve and expand current woodland areas.

Dog Mess

In the Parish:

  • 96(39%) of respondents claim this to be a problem.
  • 61(25%) of respondents claim it not to be a problem.
  • 90(36%) of respondents have no opinion.

"Please not on my doorstep"
"Educate dog owners"
"Shoot loose dogs on sight!"

The worst affected roads appear to be in Cornworthy Village – Abbey Road, Willow Lane, and Green Close.

Recommendations

Parish Council to

  1. Encourage dog owners to remove mess – place in a bag/scooper, and bin it!
  2. Put up restriction signs - fouling fines / dogs on leads.
