THE VILLAGE SHOP

Since the start of the survey the village shop/post office has closed. However, there is a small Saturday shop, that still operates, but the nearest post office is at Harbertonford.

Results of the survey show there is some need for a village shop/post office.

  • 42 respondents would use a shop on a daily basis.
  • 93 respondents would use a shop weekly.
  • 76 respondents would use a mobile shop at least weekly.
  • 56 respondents would use a mobile post office at least weekly.

" A village without a shop/pub and hall, is not a true village"

Recommendations

  1. An approach be made to the Saturday shop owners to open the shop at other times in the week.
  2. To investigate/invite owners of mobile shops to offer a service to the Parish.
  3. To ask the Post Office if mobile service is a possibility.

COMMUNITY/COOPERATIVE SHOP/POST OFFICE

Results of the survey show support for a community/co-operative shop.

  • 162 respondents would use a community shop in a week.
  • 167 respondents would spend less than £10 in the shop per week.
  • 47 respondents would spend between £10 and £25 in the shop per week.
  • 1 respondent would spend over £25 in the shop per week.
  • 32 respondents would be prepared pay in advance/operate a credit account.

NB 14 respondents said they are prepared to help run a Community Shop.

Recommendation

To set up an interest group to visit other villages with community run shops and write/publish a report.
