EDUCATION

110 people expressed an interest in taking adult education and training courses - that is

45% of the total responses to the question.

The centres that people find easiest to travel to are Totnes (96%) and Dartmouth (79%)

The Parish considers itself poorly provided for in terms of adult education facilities.

234 respondents answered the question

  • 110 (47%) no provision
  • 24 (10%) poor provision
  • 88 (37%) no opinion

"Transport is a problem for me"

People look first to Totnes and Dartmouth for their educational needs, but some activities could be held in the Parish. The numbers for courses:

  • 114 would attend Information Technology classes.
  • 97 would attend First Aid classes.
  • 71 would attend Arts/Literature classes.
  • 47 would attend DIY classes.
  • 19 other options.

"I would like an IT homework club"

Recommendations

  1. To pass the data to King Edwards College Totnes and Dartmouth Community College.
  2. To investigate the possibility of running "Home Spun" activities through Self-Help groups.
  3. To investigate use of mobile resources offered by Devon County Council Education Services.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

The Survey reveals that respondents have a mainly good opinion of the Health and Social Service

Provision, with the Caring Services highly rated. However:

  • 17 people thought the Dental Service was poor.
  • 10 people thought the Optical Service was poor.

All Services are difficult to get to for a number of people:

  • 42 people had problems getting to see a doctor.
  • 41 people had problems getting to see a dentist.
  • 39 people had problems getting to hospital appointments.
  • 35 people had problems getting to see a chemist.
  • 9 people had problems getting to family planning clinics.
  • 8 people had problems getting to Social Service Offices.
  • 14 people had problems collecting prescribed medicines.
  • 57 people would use a volunteer network to get to these services.
  • 66 people would act as volunteers.

"No NHS dentist prepared to take new patients"
"Lack of public transport"
"Chemists to send medicines by post"

Recommendations

  1. The above data to be passed to Devon Health and Social Services.
  2. The Parish to explore the possibility of setting - up a volunteer transport network to help people to get to Health Service Centres.
