A Community Appraisal for Chardstock Parish

Index

SPORT, SOCIAL and ENTERTAINMENT

Most respondents would like more activities to be available, both indoors and outdoors. However, large numbers of suggested activities are not supported by corresponding numbers of volunteers to help organise them!

The Community Hall, Play Ground and Youth Club win general approbation. Nearly ¾ think the Council Tax for the Community Hall is about right, though some would be prepared to pay more!

Joggers PictureThe Street Fayre is well attended (over 60%) and most think it should be held annually.

A large number (40%) use the footpaths at least weekly and don’t seem to have too many problems with them other than occasional poor sign-posting, mud or water, and overgrown vegetation. No doubt a very wet winter just before the appraisal period affected this.

“Community Hall & play area are excellent facilities”

“Not good at following map...”

“Stiles that are not dog friendly”

HEALTH

Blood Pressure Picture People are registered with doctors in Axminster and Chard in almost equal numbers. A large number (300) would use a doctor in Chardstock, though the split in practices would probably make this difficult. Some would use a computer link.

Wheelchair Sign Picture Leg in Plaster Picture A small number have problems collecting prescriptions; a small but obviously significant number have used the Helpline Drivers scheme. Hopefully the Flexibus is making things easier.

“Would use surgery in village if our own doctor was involved”

Access for the disabled to buildings used by the public is considered reasonable or better by most people, and the few specific problems highlighted have been passed to the appropriate people.

SCHOOL

A large majority think the size of the school should be limited, although 23% have no opinion and 16% think it should continue to grow.

School PictureIt is interesting to note that there are 34 children living in the Parish who are of an age to attend St. Andrew’s School, but they make up only 25% of the school population [no wonder we have a traffic problem during term time! Eds.]

“School time makes traffic exceptionally heavy between 8.30-9.15 & 3.00-4.15”

The idea of having a doctor’s surgery at St. Andrew’s School is welcomed (but see the comments in the Health section), as are computer facilities for public use, and a fitness & exercise room. A small number would make use of a homework club – in fact, about the same number as there are children living in the village!
