A Community Appraisal for Chardstock Parish

Index

HOUSEHOLD

510 personal returns were received, from 240 males and 270 females. The age and gender splits correspond closely with the 1991 census returns, with the exception of the 17-21 year group which in this survey is much smaller. It is interesting to note that the age range 40-59 accounts for nearly 33% of the population, those aged 60 and over make up 44%, most households consist of 1 or 2 persons, and a substantial proportion of us live in the outlying areas of the Parish.

HOUSING

Castle Graphic Only 4% are looking for alternative accommodation with 96% apparently happy with their lot in the Parish of Chardstock.

About 1/5th feel that no extra housing is acceptable. Those who do, favour housing for local people and young people.  However, these groups don’t seem to be looking for accommodation in significant numbers. Conversion of existing buildings is favoured by over half the respondents, followed by infilling with single building or infilling with small groups of buildings, though as to where this might be, there is no clear consensus of opinion.

“Any location would spoil the beauty of this lovely Parish.”

“A balanced mixture”

“Low cost housing for low income families”

“Warden controlled for the elderly”

“We like it as it is”

If there has to be more housing, we are evenly split on using greenfield sites linked to the provision of recreational needs, with 44% for and 43% against, and 13% having no opinion.

“Brown sites or infill only”

“No development at all”

“Only in appropriate areas”
