LOCAL ECONOMY

People in the Burrator Parish in general like to support the local shops. Most support being for the Post Office (326 people 87%). Most people are also keen to support other forms of local business wherever possible. Only a few (18 people 5%) stated that the lack of transport forced them to shop locally. Great support was shown for milk deliveries (105 people 55%) and several (86, 45%) wanted a mobile shop.

‘Craft centre employment would be acceptable’

EMPLOYMENT

The Burrator Parish has a high percentage of retired persons (191 people 43%). The working population being employed mainly it seems in Agriculture, Medical/Nursing, Education with 57 people running their own businesses employing 228 people. 92 people would like to become self employed, barriers to this being: lack of premises, finance and contact. 6 people intend becoming self-employed. Additional employment favoured was led by agriculture/fisheries and forestry (245 people 81%) followed by educational employment (134 people 44%).

This was very close and the result split by

Yes 160 people 37%

No 168 people 38%

If tourists were to be encouraged at all, most support was shown for the B&B trade (138 people 90%) followed by Guest Houses (87 people 57%) and Camp Sites (83 people 54%).
