Help with clubs

There were 29 offers of help to organise and set up clubs. Any of the clubs suggested would be viable, even the Basketball Club would provide enough members to produce a team – provided these were all potential players

The lack of Youth activities is an issue that cuts across all parts of the parish. A meeting needs to be set up with invitations to all 7–17 year olds in the parish, volunteers and representatives of county governing bodies, to attend and help solve the problem.

Recommendation: Set up an Activities Group at the Public Meeting.

Sports facilities

187 people supported the need for some additional sports facilities. There were marked preference differences amongst the communities that are listed below:

Each of the following were sought by 20 or potential users: Basketball court, roller blades, bowling alley, skateboard ramp, permanent goal nets and bike ramp.

Sports field

A Sports Field was supported by 246 people, gaining 90 supporters from Walkhampton and 135 from Dousland.

A play area for children gained support from 246 people overall.

Other facilities proposed included:

  • Cybercafé / Coffee bar
  • Gymnasium
  • Youth based general facilities
  • Petanque
  • Squash Court

Comment: There would seem to be enough support for most of the listed interests.

Village hall – Community centre

The Village Hall or Community Centre is seen as the most important facility with the support of 369 (84%). Dousland (without a centre) provided 192 people supporting such a centre. This level of interest may indicate that Dousland residents would support a separate centre for their community; a focal point for the community at Dousland would appear to have significant potential for use by all age groups.

Recommendation: Those people from Dousland interested in creating a community focus should make themselves known at the Public Meeting.

Mobile library service

358 people consider the Mobile Library as important, of those 207 people consider the service mainly good or reasonable; 17 people say they have no service.

Recommendation: Pass this information to the Mobile Library Service and ask them to establish just how much of the parish is being isolated and where the service is considered less than satisfactory. (86%) considered the service very important or important so it is essential to get the service right).

Place of religious worship

295 people said it was important of whom 255 people thought it was an important part of the village.

  • 50% 191 people consider it important for Sunday worship
  • 68% 261 people relating its importance to births deaths & marriages
  • 64% 245 people consider it important as an historic building
  • 51% think every parish should have one

General

Would you help with a Good Neighbour Scheme?

176 people expressed a willingness to help occasionally or more often.

Recommendation: The Parish Council will be seeking advice from relevant authorities on how best such groups can be set up.

Local information

359 People think the village Information Boards are important.

Would you help with the Parish Magazine?

The amount of information available concerning the parish was considered good/reasonable by 73% 326 people. There are 15 people prepared to help with the Burrator Beacon issue.

Recommendation: The Parish Council Working Group will make contact with volunteers over the coming months.
