ENVIRONMENT

All communities felt that the provision of litter bins and dog mess bins could be improved. Suggestions were made about where they are needed.

Nearly half of the respondents in Milton Combe had experienced a problem with flooding by surface water compared to one in six elsewhere. A list of locations has been compiled.

15% of all respondents who expressed an opinion felt that public services were good. Road gritting was singled out for criticism. A lot of details were given about poor services in the area.

LOCAL SERVICES

Over half of people use their village shop on a daily or weekly basis. Just under half of respondents use the village post office on a daily or weekly basis. The Yelverton shops are used more frequently for weekly shopping.

A quarter of respondents have milk delivered. Over 120 people visit the village post office for its banking services in addition to postal services and nearly 150 for paying bills. The post office is also valued for its local information and shopping facilities.

There was some support for (including people willing to organise) all new clubs and activities suggested (chess, crafts, creative writing, languages and youth club). The highest response for people wishing to participate or organise was for crafts and languages. Other suggestions were wide-ranging but had an emphasis towards fitness and yoga.

A good number of people showed interest in the I.T. Suite in school being made available for evenings and weekend use and also for use as an Internet café and homework club.

172 people said they would like it available for evening classes and 117 for weekend use. There were also

several other ideas for how it could be used within the community.

36% of people thought the playground facilities were reasonable or good. 23% of respondents thought the local social facilities were poor. 19% thought they were reasonable or good with 58% having no opinion.

213 people said they would use the proposed sports hall at St. Andrew’s school in the evenings, 134 of these were in the age range of 22-59. 60 were under 22.

229 people said they would use the proposed sports hall at weekends. 135 of these were in the age range 22-59. 75 people were under 22.

All the suggested activities for the proposed sports hall received good levels of interest. The most popular activities were swimming, keep fit / yoga / aerobics and badminton.

Just over half of respondents said they would use the hall sometime. Most people (227) who would use the hall expected to do so weekly. Just under half said that they would never use it.

Although two-thirds of people in Buckland Monachorum are aware that the Baptist Hostel (Holiday and Conference Centre) is available for community use, only a quarter of people in other communities are aware of this.

A list of other reasons for attending the village hall shows that it is used by the community for a variety of uses.

64% of respondents from Buckland Monachorum attended a village hall event in the last year compared to an average of 35% from other areas. The village hall events of the last year were attended more by those aged over 40 than those under 40.
