Local Environment

90% (171) thought it important to stop dog fouling and 98% (186) to improve removing litter. Nearly all the initiatives such as tree planting, wildlife protection, signposting paths and bridleways were seen as important. The results suggest the present number of footpaths is acceptable.

108 people use footpaths/bridleways at least monthly or more often, 83 people do so without difficulty, although 45 people can't. It is not clear as to why.

Keeping verges clean within the village was considered important, but allowing them to grow along lanes for wildlife. A number of comments were made about agricultural machinery damaging verges, especially hedge trimming soon after the ditches have been cleaned out.

Pollution

Generally people were quite worried about this, particularly regarding litter (103 people) but also to chemical and traffic polution. It is not clear as to whether the last two could be a reflection on wider environmental issues. A few comments were recorded concerning the transportation of slurry through the village and resulting smell.

Clean Up Bridstowe Day

111 people would be willing to take part with the rivers being in need of the highest attention (67 people) and 42 for cleaning the playing field.

Employment

Employment structure

Most people work at home or within 10 miles. Some 8 people were seeking work at the time of the survey and there is a high proportion of people running their own business; 68 people (34%) employing 110 other people. About half of businesses are agricultural.

Millennium

There is a fairly even split of 50/50 as to whether there should be some form of celebration. The 11-16s were enthusiastic and 22-39s also in favour. Given the enthusiasm of the younger element, it would be important to get these people on board at an early stage to consider ideas.

There were 64 suggestions, the most popular were:

  • Village Party (22)
  • Firework Party (10)

    Other suggestions were:

  • planting trees or an avenue of trees
  • a boundary stone
  • combined church services
  • time capsule
  • a plaque or monument
  • barbecue

  • organised walks/talks/tours
  • tea rooms and garden centres/heritage

    Noticeboard/Information

This is fairly evenly split, 108 do not read noticeboards, but 97 do.

91% (175) are in favour of having a community information point and the favoured position is in the Post Office area (135).

21 people would be prepared to help with a parish newsletter.
