Bishop's Nympton Community Appraisal

Action Plan

Countryside

Every parishioner has a duty to maintain the countryside and keep it litter free.

In order to maintain the integrity of the countryside, parishioners must find a way for all factions of the community to work together.

Roads

The Steering Committee realise that the Parish Council have for some time been pressing the Highways Department to look at the various problems with road safety within the parish. A comprehensive report on this particular issue will be forwarded to Devon County Council's Highways Department highlighting the concerns and looking for action to improve the various danger spots. Fatalities should not be the criteria by which safety is judged.

Environmental Services

A copy of the relevent section of this report should be sent to British Gas to request that they should carry out a feasibility study in the parish.

Unfortunately, from previous experience, the Steering Group are aware that an increase in the frequency of public transport is unlikely, although representation using the information from the appraisal will be made to the Highways Department. As an alternative, a more formalised system of using the people prepared to provide a voluntary car service needs to be created and circulated within the parish.

Training & Education

Many people expressed an interest in various adult education interests and the Steering Group is aware that the Adult Education Tutor in the South Molton Community College would welcome suggestions from parishioners for village activities. A list of those interested should be drawn up and submitted.

Parking

A car park has been shown to be a priority in the village and every pressure should be put on the Parish Council to resolve the question by the end of 1998.

Parish Hall

Since the appraisal was made, steps have been taken to apply for a Millennium Grant to build a new Parish Hall. If this application is successful then the assistance of all those people offering help in fund raising activities will be needed. Applications will be submitted for other funding should the Millennium Grant not be forthcoming.

Sport

A new sports committee is to be constituted to try to obtain Lottery money to purchase a new field for outdoor sports. In the meantime, the existing Cricket Club have given permission to play the coming season on a field in the Parish. Again fund raising will be a priority and all those volunteers will be needed.

Those people wanting to use the school field/facilities (particularly tennis/netball etc.) should band together to approach the headmaster for permission to do so. Anyone prepared to take responsibility for arranging and co-ordinating this should provide their details to a member of the Steering Group.

Final Comment

"It is easy to focus on our differences and issues which seperate us - the challenge for any community is to develop respect and acceptance of all that community."
