EMPLOYMENT

ComputerMost people (89%) would like to see more jobs becoming available in Bampton and a majority (79%) think that the tourist industry should be encouraged. Those in favour of developing tourism generally felt that visitors would be attracted to the town by enhancing what we have at present. Extending the remit of Bampton in Bloom to cover the winter months was suggested, also a ‘Bampton Historic Day’.

If a few small scale light industrial workshops were proposed for Bampton, the majority of people (68%) would prefer them to be at Scott’s Quarry Worksite. A minority (27%) would sooner see them on the existing industrial estate.

Approximately 1 person in 10 is seeking paid employment and half of these people are looking for unskilled work.

Among respondents, 1 person in 5 is running a business in the Parish and 13 of these businesses (29%) employ a total of 45 other staff.

B & B SignAgriculture accounts for a quarter (26%) of all business types and others include Professional Services (19%), Retail/Repairs (14%), Hotels & Catering/Tourism (14%), Construction (10%).

Lack of start-up finance is the most likely issue restricting people from becoming self-employed in the next 12 months.

More than half of all respondents (56%) work or study at home or within the Parish. Overall, 3 out of 4 people (75%) work or study within 10 miles of home.
