VOLUNTARY WORK

Girl Carrying Shopping1 in 5 people perform voluntary work of some kind covering just about every aspect of life today. Helping all age groups: Bampton VA Primary school, support group for Babies and Adults, Guides and Scouts, Sports Coaching, Youth Work, Meals on Wheels, shopping for an elderly neighbour. Practical work in and around Bampton: footpath maintenance and Bampton in Bloom. Helping registered charities in shops and at Knightshayes for example. Many hours are spent in Church work of all kinds, both at St. Michael’s and at the Methodist Church. Some people give a lot of time helping to organise Bampton’s many clubs and societies. Altogether, this has to be one of the most positively encouraging findings to come out of the Appraisal.

BAMPTON FAIR

The October fair was granted in 1258 to the Rector of Bampton and his successors to be held at the chapel of St Luke without the town of Bampton, and at the festival of that Saint, for 3 days.

Extreme suggestions ranged from abandoning the fair to moving it out of the town centre and turning it back into a 3-day event!

There were more than 130 suggestions for additional attractions to improve Bampton Fair. The largest number (43%) wanted it to have more and better craft stalls and less cheap and shoddy goods for sale. Some people (31%) wanted to have the ponies back or other animals. Several ideas (20%) were for street entertainments such as Morris Dancing, Country Dancing, street musicians and a fire eater. A few people would like to see stalls selling local produce, a Farmers’ Market perhaps. A small number wanted better rides at the fun fair.

‘Reduce tacky stalls’

‘More traditional crafts’

‘Dancing in the street’

‘A fire eater’
