Everyone thought the standard of the Fire Service was good or reasonable (99%) and the Ambulance Service also scored well in this respect (90%).

The standard of the Police Service, however, was rated as poor by more than half of all respondents (54%).

‘The sight of a uniform has a steadying effect’

Public Services provided by Mid Devon District Council were rated as good or reasonable by 4 out of 5 people (81%). Bampton Town Council was similarly rated by 3 out of 4 people (77%). Using the same rating criteria, 7 out of 10 people (71%) approved of Devon County Council services.

‘I’d like gas mains brought to the town’

BooksBampton Library was not mentioned in the questionnaire but there were several favourable comments on the quality of the service provided.

A few properties have problems with river flooding (8%) and a similar number with surface water (10%). A larger number suffer from storm water flooding (14%).

The standard of services such as telephone, refuse collection, mains electricity and street lighting all scored well (above 90% good or reasonable in all cases), also mains water (88%). The winter weather service (gritting) (77%) and roadside care and street cleaning (71%) appear less satisfactory and fewer people are satisfied with the standard of the public toilets (66%).

‘Too much mechanised gutter cleaning’

‘River bridge toilets are very poor’

2 out of 3 people (66%) consider that Bampton needs a Dog Warden.
