SPORT, SOCIAL & ENTERTAINMENT

The majority felt that leisure and sports facilities for young people were poor; a lot of people (74%) thought that children up to 16 years were poorly catered for and an even larger number (87%) thought the same for the 17 to 25 year age group. Many people linked nuisance behaviour on the part of the younger age group (in and around the Church porch for example) with the lack of sports and social activities. There was a feeling that the Town Council should look into provision for youth as a matter of urgency, though a few people placed blame squarely on the shoulders of parents.

‘Bampton needs sporting facilities for young people’

‘The availability of the playground again is welcome’

  • ACTION - Bampton Town Council to formulate a Youth Policy

Adults aged 26 to 60 fared better with over half of respondents (59%) rating facilities as reasonable or good, and for the over 60s this went up further (61%).

There are many different sports interests in Bampton, ranging from Archery to Yoga.

Keep FitEach indoor and outdoor activity listed on the questionnaire is supported and Keep Fit is top of the list with 109 people (36% of respondents). Badminton, Pool and Football (indoor and outdoor) are also popular. Yoga, Short Mat Bowls, Snooker/Billiards, Table Tennis, Archery, Squash and Cricket all have support. In addition, 101 people participate in other sports not specifically mentioned on the questionnaire. These include Swimming, Walking, Cycling, Tennis, Athletics, Golf, Martial Arts and country pursuits such as Angling, Horse Riding and Shooting.

Social interests cover an equally varied range of activities to suit all tastes. 103 people participate in or would support an Information Technology facility and this interest is mirrored in a separate question under Education.

‘More use could be made of school premises’

Gardening (Bampton Plants and Gardens Society) and Conservation (The Bampton Society) are also highly popular as well as Brownies,Guides,Cubs and Scouts and the Club for Senior Citizens. Musical and Artistic groups are quite popular; Music Society, Choral Society, Band, Dance, Drama, Painting and Drawing Circle and Photography. Minority interests include Bridge Club, Whist Drives and the WI.

Visits to theatres and shows with coach travel included are much appreciated.

HALLS

A majority of people (63%) thought that the halls adequately meet the needs of Bampton. Among those who thought the halls were inadequate, over half (58%) preferred the option of building a new hall rather than updating the existing public hall (42%). If a new hall were to be built, the majority (64%) thought it should be sited at Scott’s Quarry Worksite. However, in a separate question concerning Scott’s Worksite, although the overwhelming majority of people (94%) thought it should be developed for the Community, only a tiny fraction (3%) suggested building a new hall there.

‘The Public Hall is a disgrace inside and out’

‘Completely redevelop Public Hall site’
