HOUSING A small number of households (6%) contain people in need of alternative accommodation, more than half needing a starter home to rent or buy. A firm majority think that some additional housing is needed in the Parish judging by the high level of response. There is strong opinion that more starter homes are required to encourage young people to remain in the area. Opinions were divided on the type of housing needed in Bampton, with housing for local people at the top of the list (47%). Housing for young people came next (36%), then low income families (21%) and the elderly (20%). Some people felt that no housing was needed (14%). Acceptable housing development in the form of conversions was favoured by more than half of all respondents (58%), followed by those who would prefer to see small groups of houses being built (43%) or single dwellings (32%). Twice as many people thought that houses should be built for restricted sale (42%) compared with unrestricted sale (20%).
LOCAL COUNTRYSIDE & ENVIRONMENT Between planning the Town Appraisal and writing this report, plans to conserve the Woodland Site as a Millennium Green were announced. It is heartening to know that this scheme reflects Appraisal responses very closely. 'Something the whole community can enjoy'
'A haven for nature' Some people suggested a recreation area for children (15%), including an adventure playground and only a very small proportion favoured development such as housing or business premises (4%). 'Mixed woodland with walks, picnic areas and conservation projects' Interestingly, the word 'visitors' appeared once and the words 'car' and 'traffic' were not mentioned at all. We want to keep the Woodland Site for ourselves! Most people want to see Lower Lukes conserved in the same way as the Woodland Site and the majority (88%) want Lower Lukes to be developed with a tree planted area. People thought the building in Lower Lukes should be linked with the general leisure, conservation and educational aspects of the whole site, with emphasis on young people. 'Linked in with the Woodland scheme' A large number of people (82%) would like overhead electricity supply wires to be replaced with underground cables. Approximately 4 out of 5 people (79%) use Bampton's public footpaths and bridleways, and of these, more than half (54%) use them at least once a week. A pleasant extension for a walk could include the Woodland Site, especially for anyone walking along West Street (part of the Exe Valley Way). Scotts Quarry Worksite attracted much comment including some imaginative suggestions. A lot of people were in favour of light industrial development (31%) and a quarter (26%) suggested some kind of sports or leisure facility, including something specifically for young people. Several people thought the site could be connected to the town via a cycle-and-foot path through an extension of Lord's Meadow. Another idea involved cutting a relief road to the industrial estate to avoid the need for so many heavy lorries passing through the town. However, other people pointed out the difficulties and enormous costs involved in cleaning up the site prior to any development.
