Ashwater Parish Community Appraisal - 1997

Key Findings

Housing
There were a number of households in need of alternative accommodation. These respondents wanted starter homes to rent or buy. The need to provide housing for young/local/low income families was identified as important by the majority of the parish.

Recommendation
The Parish Council should encourage people to put their names on the T.D.C. housing list and press for local housing in the parish.

Recreational/Sports Facilities
An overwhelming number (93%) of respondents thought the parish is in need of a playing field.

A majority of replies wish to have a new parish hall, with 19 people willing to serve on a committee.

There are a wide range of recreational opportunities which people would wish to see in the parish.

Recommendation
The 19 people willing to serve on a hall committee should liaise with the present hall committee to explore possibilities and options for a new hall.

Transport
A significant number of people have difficulties in getting out of Ashwater. Many would like to see improvements to bus routes and time tables.

The community bus concept was well supported. Many people would use the bus and 11 people volunteered to drive.

Recommendation
The Parish Council should inform local bus companies of the findings and fully explore the idea of a community bus aith other local agencies.

Employment and Training
The vast majority of people are in employment. A small number (10) are seeking employment. 25% of respondents are retired.

Training in new technology was identified as the main training need. There is support for workshop developments to provide employment.
