29. GENERAL COMMENTS (Written by respondents at the end of Questionnaires) As well as comments on specific questions, many respondents added other items of interest/concern. Listed below are some of those which highlight other important ideas and issues that may also influence future developments within the Parishes: ‘Not enough care or concern is taken by either Local or National Government for Rural Dwellers, especially in respect of the rising cost of living in the rural areas’ ‘I think it is disgraceful that we have to pay to park at the North Devon District Hospital when attending clinics and visiting patients’ ‘I think Councillors should live in the area for at least five years before they can become Councillors, and District Councillors should do it for the honour and not financial reward’ ‘I would like to see a general 30mph speed restriction on all non ‘A’ roads in the parish’ ‘There doesn’t seem to be a question for drainage. I would like to know what is being done about the flooding….We have complained but to no avail’ ‘All new housing should have some type of ‘tie’ attached to it so that it cannot become just private housing in the future, contradicting the reasons it was built in the first place’ ‘Whilst living in the Parish, the situation of our house means we relate more to villages outside the Parish’ ‘Business rates and Planning kill off a lot of alternative ideas that could be started in our area’ ‘We had difficulty completing this questionnaire as so little of it was relevant to Trentishoe…. In fact, other than in terms of Council Tax (none of which appears to be spent on Trentishoe) we have no links whatsoever with Kentisbury' ‘Perhaps an extended magazine for the area could include the work of the Exmoor National Park, the National Trust and the Calvert Trust, etc…and what is going on in the wider community (Barnstaple, Ilfracombe) as it affects us in our daily lives’ ‘We are a parish over-ruled by the National Trust who do not encourage locals to live here’ ‘There would be no need to build any houses if the National Trust gave up their holiday homes and charged a decent rent below mortgage rates’ ‘Double Council Tax on second homes’ Recommendation: Parish Councils to review these general comments and consider what action should be taken, if any. 30.
