12. EDUCATION & TRAINING

98 people would be interested in taking up vocational/adult training opportunities now or in the future.

There were a range of other suggestions, including foreign languages, embroidery, wood and metal work, local history, first aid and health & safety, sign language, building and decorating skills, book-keeping.

81 people can get to a Centre in Barnstaple, and 58 to a Centre in Ilfracombe, and 86 people would be interested if training were to be provided in the community. 56 people thought provision for adult learning in the community was poor, 55 thought there was no provision, and 60 had no opinion. Only 17 people thought the provision good or reasonable.

Recommendations:

  1. Parish Councils/Village Hall Committee to analyse the survey responses and identify the training required in the community.
  2. Parish Councils/Village Hall Committee to inform possible providers, and ensure adequate publicity for any training provided.

13. SCHOOL

The majority (97%) of those expressing an opinion thought the Village School important in the local community.

14. HEALTH, PUBLIC & SOCIAL SERVICES

In the main health services were regarded by the majority to be good to reasonable

However:

considered hospital transport to be poor

The 4 people who answered the section on Day Care thought it poor

Nobody thought District Nurse, Maternity Care, or Meals on Wheels poor

A range of reasons was given concerning the difficulty people had getting to various services. These included: lack of public transport, limited surgery hours, and no NHS dentist in the area.

The majority of respondents saw the Fire and Police services as good or reasonable. However, 33 people (16%) considered the standard of service from the Police to be poor.

If we didn’t have our own vehicles, we would have difficulty getting anywhere for any service’

Recommendation:

Parish Councils to determine the extent of the problems experienced and write to Devon Social Services and the North Devon Community Health Council so that the problems and concerns expressed can be incorporated in the appropriate agency's service development plans.

15. KENTISBURY POST OFFICE

187 people think the Post Office should be allowed to offer additional services.

160 would use vehicle tax service if it were provided.

Other services for the Post Office were suggested, including carrier deliveries and more general goods.

Recommendation:

Parish Councils need to analyse the various suggestions and hold discussions with the proprietors of the Post Office to investigate if further services could be provided.
