6. VILLAGE HALL IMPROVEMENTS

50 people considered the Village Hall needed no structural improvements.

However,

83 thought there should be a covered-in toilet area

55 would like to see disabled toilets

68 would like to see wheelchair access

47 would like a function room

36 would like storage facilities

and there were 32 other suggestions, including: a bigger recycling pavilion, a larger car park, bar facilities, and an exterior light to the rear parking area.

Recommendations:

  1. Village Hall Committee need to analyse the survey forms to identify all the suggestions made, and consider the feasibility of each.
  2. Village Hall Committee to draw up a priority list for action, consider costings and liaise with the Parish Council on subsequent development.

Recommendations:

  1. Village Hall Committee should look at all the suggestions made, investigate the feasibility of each, and draw up a priority list for development purposes.
  2. Village Hall Committee to try out some new activities following the feasibility study.

8. VILLAGE GREEN

The majority (114 people) considered the Village Green was fine as it is, or had no opinion. A small minority (24) favoured some ‘improvements', such as:

extra seating, a duck pond, make the area clean and tidy, more flowers/shrubs, a play area, a nice fence around it, improved accessibility, scope and maintenance.

Recommendation:

Parish Council to consider all the suggestions for upgrading and their feasibility and draw up a priority list for action.

9. KENTISBURY PARISH MAGAZINE

The majority (59%) wanted the Kentisbury Parish Magazine to cover all three parishes. Some 61% in Arlington wanted this and 40% in Trentishoe. 19% of Kentisbury responses did not want the Magazine to cover all three parishes.

Magazine

The majority surveyed in Kentisbury are happy to pay the present subscription for the Magazine, but in Arlington and Trentishoe there is a 50:50 split, for/against.

Help with the Magazine - typing, distribution, advertising etc. - was identified from all three Parishes.

Never seen a copy’

‘Parish Council minutes too brief’

In response to a later question in the survey:

138 people (61%) (A. 16, K, 108, T. 14) thought the amount of information about what is going on in the Parishes was good or reasonable, but 54 (A. 27, K. 27, T. O) thought it was poor.

Recommendations:

  1. The Parish needs to investigate the likely subscriptions to the Magazine from Arlington and Trentishoe if these two Parishes were to be included in the Magazine, and to consider distribution to, and source of item contributions from, these two Parishes.
  2. Those offering help with the magazine need to be identified.
  3. Parish Councils and Village Hall Committee to consider ways of publicising Parish activities more widely; including notice-boards in appropriate locations, and the use of the Parish Magazine.
  4. Parish Councils to publicise more comprehensively than a brief set of minutes their deliberations and conclusions so that parishioners know more fully the reasons behind their decisions.

10. MILLENNIUM PROJECT

Something to highlight its true meaning’

Millennium Graph

70% of those with an opinion thought a project should be adopted for the Millennium.

Other suggestions include ringing of Church bells, acquiring land for a park or garden, bonfire and pig roast.

36 people would give their time to a Millennium appeal fund, 45 would give money and 24 both (i.e. 105 in total), but 101 would give neither.

Recommendation:

Parish Councils to set up a Millennium Committee to analyse the survey suggestions, investigate feasibility of each idea, draw up a priority list for possible action, and carry through proposals.

11. COMMUNITY CATALOGUE/BOOK

94 people would be willing to pay up to £5.00 for a community catalogue/book. Book

52 people would be willing to pay £5.00 - £10.00

19 people would be willing to pay £10.00 - £15.00

33 people would consider buying more than one community catalogue/book.

In order to help produce a community catalogue/book people were asked if they would be prepared to answer a more detailed set of questions, and be prepared to share some of their memories of life in the Parish in times past. 103 people said they would be prepared to answer questions, and 57 were prepared to share their memories.

Recommendations:

  1. The Kentisbury Catalogue Steering Group need to investigate the pricing of a possible catalogue/book and bear in mind likely sales.
  2. The Steering Group to prepare a detailed questionnaire about people's current house, work, interests, etc. and arrange for its piloting, distribution, collection and analysis.
  3. The Steering Group to organise the recording of people's memories of times past in Kentisbury, and collate the information gathered for possible publication in the catalogue.
