Arlington, Kentisbury & Trentishoe Community Appraisal

Results & Recommendations

April 1999

1. INTRODUCTION

The Arlington, Kentisbury & Trentishoe Community Appraisal Questionnaire was delivered to all households on the Electoral Rolls of the three parishes, i.e. to every house. 105 questionnaires (out of 192 delivered) were returned which gave a response of 55% which was an average return for the County. The households responding comprised 283 people of whom 242 responded to Part 2 (Personal) section of the questionnaire.

The number in each Parish who answered the survey were:

This report provides a summary of the results together with recommendations (made jointly by Members of the Parish Councils and the Appraisal Steering Group) and some relevant comments from respondents. The conclusions are YOURS. All other comments contained on the questionnaires have been listed separately and will be used either in connection with the recommendations in this document or considered separately by the Parish Councils or other appropriate bodies. Those people who filled in the volunteers section at the end of the questionnaire will be approached individually.

The issues identified in the Appraisal attracted a great deal of interest and the amount of work required to bring them to a successful conclusion is immense. Most projects will require careful analysis before they can proceed and some are more long-term than others. Some may prove to be totally unachievable.

It will be important to strike a balance between providing better facilities within the Parishes and retaining the important characteristics that make each Parish unique.

Therefore, this document will form an agenda for the people of Arlington, Kentisbury and Trentishoe for the next few years. Regular review of progress will be made by the Parish Councils as well as recognising new and changing circumstances as they emerge. It is hoped that Progress Reports will appear in the Kentisbury Parish Magazine with a report at each annual Parish Meeting.

Throughout the document percentage responses refer to those people "expressing an opinion", referred to as "respondents". Text in blue italics are comments of individual respondents.

Where numbers are broken down according to Parish, the letter A. stands for Arlington, K. for Kentisbury, and T for Trentishoe. The full list of results is available from the Parish Councils and members of the Appraisal Steering Group should anyone wish to see them.

2. PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS

Some 47% of households were two person households, whilst 24% had three persons, 12% one person, 10% had four, and 10% had five. Two households had 7 and 8 respectively. Of those answering Part 2 (Personal) section of the questionnaire, 48% were male and 52% female. These reflect a reasonable spread when compared with the 1991 census figures. From the 105 households completing the questionnaire, we have an age pattern for males and females as follows.

Parish-wise, Trentishoe follows the general trend, but Arlington has a 52% male and 48% female split, with Kentisbury 46% male and 54% female (of the 242 people responding to Part 2 (Personal) section).

You will note that there were no males over 75 in the sample, whilst 56% of males and 62% of the females are over the age of 40.

3. VEHICLES IN HOUSEHOLDS

The 105 households responding owned:

189 cars/vans, 14 motorbikes, 9 caravans, 4 mobile homes, 102 bicycles, while 6 households had no transport, and 67 had 2 or more vehicles (excluding bicycles).

As regards parking:

64 vehicles were parked in a garage, 122 off the road, and 3 on the road.

4. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEME

Burglar69 households would like to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, whilst 22 would not like such a scheme.

Recommendation:

Parish Councils to investigate the setting up of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, and discover which communities within the Parishes would most wish to have such a scheme.
