Caught in the act!

INDEX CD

Caught in the act!

An Index of over 9,000 names in Plymouth of those giving sworn statements as witnesses to crimes plus the names of those standing sureties for either themselves or a witness

Was your ancestor a witness to a crime in the early 18th century?

The examination books held in the Plymouth & West Devon Record Office contain the sworn statements given by witnesses to a crime.  The majority of the crimes are for theft and assault, but there are a few more serious crimes.

The examination books have been indexed by volunteers from the Devon Family History Society and provide the surname, forename, date of the statement and occasional additional information.

The names of those standing sureties for either themselves or a witness to attend the court are listed sometimes with details of their address and occupation and the amount of the surety.

Generally the statements are in date order, with some information added out of date order.  (On this CD the names are also listed alphabetically)  The name of a person can appear several times within the date of the statement as there may be more than one witness statement about the offence.  As the pages are not numbered it is necessary to search all the statements for the given date.

The examination books give an insight about the general life of our ancestors in the early 1800s.  Was your ancestor the one who gave some information about a crime, or did they commit the offence?  Search the database of over 9,000 names and find out.

INDEX CD

Crime and Punishment

An index of the Register of Summary Convictions containing over 15,000 names of people who committed a crime in Plymouth between 1875 and 1904

The register of summary convictions is held in the Plymouth & West Devon Record Office and contains over 15,000 names of people who committed a crime in Plymouth between 1875 and 1904.

The crimes range from drunkenness and vagrancy to smuggling and fradulent enlistment.  Maybe your ancestor allowed their chimney to catch fire or maybe they didn't send their child to school.  For playing Pitch & Toss the offender was fined one shilling in 1877 and for using obscene language the fine could be ten shillings or more.  Failure to send a child to school could result in a charge against the parent for each child that was absent and a fine for each charge.  The parent could end up paying quite a sum of money from maybe a meagre wage.

The database contains the surname, forename, and description of the offence, the amount of the fine, observations, the session quarter and the identity number within the session.  The observation details whether the fine was paid and to whom (i.e. Borough Treasurer or other) or imprisonment sometimes in default of the fine.

Crime and Punishment provides a miscellany of petty criminals and their crimes in Plymouth.

Plymouth Prison Index

INDEX CD

Plymouth Prison Index

An index of over 17,000 people committed to Plymouth Prison during the following years:- 1867-1878; 1888-1891 and 1909-1930

Discovering a criminal in your family can often require a great deal of detective work.  However the results can be very rewarding as with this prison register index covering the period 1867-1878; 1888-1891 and 1909-1930.

Finding an ancestor can really help to put some flesh on the bones of your family tree.

The index of over 17,000 entries, contains the following details:  Surname, first names, date (either date of trial or conviction or commital), register number, page number and notes (including aliases).

The following details are included in the registers but have not been indexed: Height, hair colour, eye colour, religion, birth place, offence, sentence and previous convictions.

As well as details of name and residence before imprisonment, the registers also gives height, weight, and colour of the eye, shape of the face and other distinguishing features or marks.

Details of earlier crimes may also be listed as well as the current offence.

Plymouth Prison was built in 1849, on a site at Greenbank in Plymouth, adjacent to the Workhouse.  It housed 81 male and female prisoners in 1897 and had apartments for officers, visiting and solitary cells, convalescent rooms and airing grounds.  The prison was closed in March 1930 and all of the prisoners were transferred to Exeter Prison.

Serial offenders will appear in the database more than once.
