John BetjemanIf you are good at writing poetry, why not enter the John Betjeman Poetry Competition 2012?

The competition is open to anyone age 10-13 and all you have to do is write a poem on the theme of 'place'. You can choose anywhere that's important to you, your bedroom, somewhere you've visited, a fave park or building - anywhere! Just try to capture in words what that place means to you.

First prize is £1000 - this will be shared between you and the English department of your school (£500 for you, £500 for the school). The winning school and the school that inspires the greatest number of entries will each win a vist from a famous poet! The winner, runner-up and second runner-up will each receive four standard class tickets from St Pancras International to Paris, Brussels or Lille. The top six entrants will win prizes of £50 book tokens.

Winners of the competition will be invited to read their poems aloud to an audience of judges, entrants, teachers and parents at an awards ceremony held on National Poetry Day, Thursday 4th October, on the upper concourse of St Pancras International (next to the bronze statue of Sir John Betjeman).

The competition is free to enter and the entry form can be found here - John Betjeman Poetry Competition 2012
