Articles Wanted to Celebrate Darwin’s Life. Devon’s Humanists are launching a website in 200 to celebrate Darwin 200 and are looking for articles relating to Charles Darwin’s discoveries and his impact on the world. In 1861, Darwin stayed in Torquay at Meadfoot House for six weeks. In addition, evidence about the antiquity of humanity - which challenged Biblical ideas of the age of the earth - was found in Torquay’s Kent’s Cavern.

Capture the spirit of Charles Darwin’s journey of discovery – one which lasted his entire life and which is still influencing us today. 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his ground-breaking book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection". His most influential voyage of discovery onboard the Beagle also set sail from Plymouth in December 1831. Use our timeline filled with anecdotes and stories to explore his journey across the oceans. Take a closer look at our living ancestral heritage with specimens from our natural history collections.

The Lost World Read 2009

Thousands of people from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hampshire, Shrewsbury, City of Westminster and most of South West England will be celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th birthday of Arthur Conan Doyle with mass-read of the classic adventure story The Lost World. Full-text copies of the book will be available across the participating sites along with a simplified version for younger or less confident readers, a reader's guide and a graphic-style biography of Charles Darwin. An extensive website will provide background information on Doyle and Darwin as well as downloads and other resources. Special activities are taking place linked to the project.

The Great Plant Hunt

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, has created The Great Plant Hunt, an innovative project to get primary school children out and about and excited by nature. The Great Plant Hunt is funded by the Wellcome Trust as part of a year of celebrations to mark the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin.

In spring 2009, more than 22,000 state primary schools will be sent a treasure chest of resources to encourage young children, aged 5-11, to engage with the natural world around them. Early next year the registration site www.greatplanthunt.org will morph into a splendid online resource, accessible to everyone, to support the resources that will be sent to schools. There will be films of real plant hunters across the globe, games and activities and details of a nationwide school science project will be revealed.

On board with Darwin: an exploration of the work of Exmouth artist Conrad Martens

Description:  A free and open workshop and discussion of the collaboration of artists and naturalists. 15:00 - 16:30: An illustrated introduction by Steve Hughes to Martens' life, work and experiences of the voyage. 16:30 - 18:00: Refreshment and an opportunity to search the international collection of Martens' work online as well as look at books and other archival materials. 18:00 - 20:30: An exploration of the context of Martens and the other Beagle artists in relation to Darwin's work, with contributions from Steve Hughes, Deborah Robinson (Artist), Keith Nichols (Psychologist and Arts Author and commentator), John Bryant (Biologist), John Dupre (Author of 'Darwin's Legacy')

Kents Cavern: the Darwin anniversary excavations 2009

The country's leading experts in the palaeolithic are planning to conduct the first major excavations in Kents Cavern since the 1920s. They hope that the information recovered from new fieldwork will contribute to widely-debated issues in palaeoanthropology. Most notably, they will concentrate on the origins of the cave’s use as a human shelter, and they hope to establish firmer dates for the first occupation of the cave by Neanderthals and by early members of our own species.
