Lessons learned from 2001
The Inquiry organised by Devon County Council into the 2001 epidemic highlighted many inadequacies in the Government's response to the outbreak. We are encouraged that many of the lessons learned from that Inquiry chaired by Prof Ian Mercer have been adopted by the Government in the national contingency plan.
The immediate ban on all livestock movement was vital and regulations for registering movements have been tightened up. The controversial use of burial pits has been ruled out and the Government now has vaccination as an option for combating the spread of the disease.
