South Hams
Dartmouth Castle
Dartmouth Castle is from the 15th Century and was one of the first built for artillery. It has a Victorian coastal defence battery with fully equipped guns, some of which had a range of over two miles. The castle affords brilliant views of the river Dart and surrounding area.
Today, it is possible to approach the castle by boat without fear of attack. There is a ferry from Dartmouth which follows the wooded coastline of the estuary past the picturesque Warfleet Creek, an ancient anchorage used at the time of the Armada.
