FUTURE OF NORTH DEVON RECORD OFFICE
The Council is currently looking at ways of sustaining a heritage service in North Devon. As of September 2015, the North Devon Record Office remains open and available in line with the published opening hours. If there are any planned changes to the availability of services in the coming months, all efforts will be made to ensure customers and stakeholders are informed in advance of any changes being made.
Barnstaple Local Studies Library is part of the North Devon Local Studies Centre and is situated on the second floor of the North Devon Library and Record Office building in Barnstaple.
We welcome local and family history enquiries by phone or e-mail and personal visitors from across the world.
Many of our customers are from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada and South Wales, tracing their ancestry back to North Devon, or were World War II evacuees, and want to revisit their childhood haunts.
However you do not have to have North Devon family connections to benefit from our help and expert guidance.
You can drop in to see us at any time during opening hours, or contact us by phone or e-mail for your local and family history enquiries, for advice or to book resources for your visit.
Devon Libraries subscribe to the Ancestry online family history website which includes Census records from 1841-1911 and birth, marriage and death indexes for the whole of England and Wales, as well as certain London parish and Poor Law records, US passenger lists, Australian transportation registers and World War I service, pension and medal card index records.
Devon Libraries members can use the Ancestry online family history website FREE for two hours a day in any Devon library however this is restricted to one hour a day at our Local Studies Centre. This may be booked in advance by telephone or personal visit and members can use the balance of their daily computer allowance on other library computers
Devon Archives and Local Studies Service also offer FREE use of the findmypast family history and British Newspaper Archive websites (subject to restricted user numbers) and FREE downloads from Discovery, part of the National Archives website, in our Local Studies Centre at Barnstaple and at the Devon Heritage Centre at Sowton, Exeter (normal charges for print-outs apply).
Findmypast, British Newspaper Archive, and Discovery sessions are restricted to an hour a day for visitors to the Centres and are for private use only ie commercial or third party access is NOT permissible under terms of the licence agreement. No advance bookings can be made via telephone or e-mail.
