Green Infrastructure
What is Green Infrastructure?
‘Green Infrastructure' is a term used to describe the network of natural spaces and corridors in a given area. These provide areas for recreation and education, habitats for wildlife and also provide environmental services such as flood defence or absorption of air pollution. If these areas did not exist, then our lives would be very different; and for this reason, these natural and semi-natural areas are identified as part of the basic ‘infrastructure’ that enables us to live as we do.
Green Infrastructure assets include open spaces such as parks and gardens, allotments, woodlands, fields, hedges, lakes, ponds, playing fields, coastal habitats, as well as footpaths, cycleways or rivers.
Devon County Council Green Infrastructure Strategy
Devon County Council has prepared a draft Green Infrastructure Strategy. This shows green infrastructure opportunities and deficiencies on a Devon-wide scale. It provides the framework in terms of principles and evidence base for more detailed green infrastructure policies to be included within Core Strategies and other Planning Documents.
Please note: the consultation period for the draft strategy has now ended. View the draft consultation document.
Green Infrastructure Mapping
Many green infrastructure assets in Devon have been digitally mapped by various organisations. Much of this information has been collated onto a single map for Devon.
