All statistics and information shown in these pages refers to Devon LA Maintained Schools, unless otherwise specified. A number of schools that were previously LA Maintained Schools have become Academies and their data may not always be available. Where data is available it will be included – please check headings carefully.

1 Pupil Numbers
The collection of information, from Nursery, Primary, Secondary and Special schools, is made in each of the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms by means of the Schools Census and is subject to the Department for Education (DfE) requirements. A full return is collected, for the DfE, in the Spring Term with abbreviated versions in the Autumn and Summer Terms. Pupil Referral Units only complete a census return in the Spring term. Careers South West Ltd, carry out an annual survey of post 16 education. This survey shows whether pupils are continuing education in schools or colleges and also other destinations (e.g. entering employment, training, unemployment etc.).
Community & Voluntary Schools in Devon
Children are eligible for admission to Nursery education from the beginning of the term after their third birthday. This may differ from Early Years entitlement.
In Devon, as in most Local Authorities, demand greatly exceeds the number of places available. If places are available, children below compulsory school age can attend voluntarily, either a separate Nursery School or a Nursery Class in a Primary School, on a full-time or part-time basis.
The Authority is currently taking part in a Government “pilot” scheme which introduces early years funding for 2 year-old children, in certain areas of Devon, who are living in households with a low-income. These children are able to attend any registered early years provision, including schools, provided within the Authority.
The Government is currently re-viewing the “pilot” with a view to increasing the provision for 2 year olds and therefore the Authority awaits this decision before deciding it’s future provision..

A number of primary schools are converting to Academy status and in future will no longer be under Local Authority control
In all areas of Devon there are Comprehensive Schools and Community Colleges which cater for all children in the neighbourhood with one Church of England Comprehensive school in Exeter whose admissions are based on Faith. A number of secondary schools are converting to Academy status and in future will no longer be under Local Authority control.
A significant proportion of children now stay on at school, or transfer to a tertiary college, beyond the compulsory school age of 16, many of them working for the examination qualifications which are necessary for entry to higher education or which may improve their prospects in seeking employment on leaving school/college. After the age of 16 there is usually increased subject specialisation but the extent varies from school to school.
Admission of Rising Fives
By law children must be in full-time education by the start of the term following their fifth birthday. From September 2011, schools in Devon offer admission from the beginning of the September term following the child’s fourth birthday. A later start of schooling can be agreed between the parent and school.
When can my child start at a LA Maintained nursery or in a foundation stage unit?
Children are funded to start at nursery or in a foundation stage unit from the start of the term after their third birthday. You will need to speak with the head teacher at the school to find out about the times when children can start; this differs from school to school. Devon County Council will fund your child to start at a nursery or foundation stage unit for up to 15 hours a week based on the dates below.

Can 2 year olds attend the nursery?
A few nurseries do offer places to 2 year old children. These places must be paid for by parents. Generally children are admitted during the term in which they have their third birthday. These children are called ‘rising three year olds’.
“Under the 1993 Education Act, if it is necessary for the LA to determine the special educational provision for a child. The Authority makes and maintains a Statement of his or her Special Educational Needs. This Statement specifies the special educational provision to be made in order to meet those needs.
This provision can either be in a mainstream school or unit, or a special school.
Children and young people with Statements of Special Educational Needs who are placed in special schools are offered a differentiated curriculum appropriate to their learning needs, together with support to develop their social skills and independence. Most special schools are day schools: the remainder are residential schools which provide particularly for children with the severest difficulties. Compulsory attendance at special schools is from 5 – 16 years, but in some special schools children stay longer”.
