What's new?
  • Early Years Entitlement - Funding Increase

We are pleased to confirm that the funding rate for the early years entitlement for 3 & 4 year olds has increased to £3.70 per hour.

This is the outcome following the Early years funding review earlier this year when we consulted on proposals to change the funding elements so that we could make an increase to the hourly rate paid to providers. Further to that, we are really pleased to inform you that approval has been given to implement the £3.70 hourly rate from September 2014, rather than April 2015 so providers will be funded from Autumn Term at this new rate.

More information about Early Years Entitlement Funding can be found at: www.devon.gov.uk/eyef

  • Paediatric First Aid Training

The Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed that, from 1 Sept 2014, it is no longer a requirement for practitioners to attend Paediatric First Aid training that is approved by the Local Authority. The new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), effective from 1 Sept 2014, states: 3.25 Paediatric First Aid training must be relevant for workers caring for young children and where relevant, babies. Providers can choose which organisation they wish to provide the training (preferably one with a nationally approved and accredited first aid qualification or one that is a member of a trade body with an approval and monitoring scheme) but the training must cover the course content as for St John Ambulance or Red Cross paediatric first aid training and be renewed every three years.

  • New SEND Code of Practice

The new SEND Code has now been approved by the Parliament and will come into force on the 1 September 2014. The code covers the 0-25 age and sets out the statutory guidance on duties, policies and procedures for all organisations who work with and support children and young people with special education needs and disabilities.

For further resources, including a guide to the Special Educational Needs & Disability reforms for those working in early years visit the Foundation Years website.

  • Have Your Say on Two Year Olds: the TACTYC Workforce and Quality Survey

The ‘Workforce and Quality for Two Year Olds’ survey is being launched this week as part of a research study funded by TACTYC and being carried out by the Universities of Plymouth and Oxford. The overall study aims to inform the roll-out of the early education programme for two year olds. Through the online survey, we want to find out who is working with two year olds: what are their qualifications and experience, how well prepared do they feel to meet the needs of two year olds and their families, and what additional support is needed?
If you are a practitioner, leader or manager of a setting or school providing for two year olds (whether or not you offer funded places) you can find the survey here.

  • 2gether Eligibility Extended

The Government is planning to extend the eligibility criteria for free childcare for 2 year olds, in Devon known as 2gether, with effect from 1 September 2014 and we are looking to see if all or some of that can be introduced earlier. As a first step with immediate effect Devon’s Looked After Children, those that have left care through special guardianship or through adoption or residence order, are eligible.
