Exe Estuary Background
The development of the Exe Estuary Trail is an important element of the County Council’s aspirations to encourage more sustainable and healthytravel by walking and cycling.
In 1998, Devon County Council commissioned a report from Sustrans covering the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 2 for the whole of South Devon. The suggested route was shown diagrammatically in the Devon Local Transport Plan 2001-2006 published in July 2000.
Subsequently, on the 6th March 2001, the County Council Executive Committee resolved that the route around the Exe Estuary should be developed.
Devon County Council has identified within its corporate plan, targets relating to increasing cycling and walking and reducing the reliance on motor vehicles. The County Council is also looking to improve the health of communities by developing opportunities for physical activity.
