Religious Education
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION in Devon, Torbay and Plymouth Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools is taught in accordance with the local Agreed Syllabus. In voluntary aided schools, the religious education offered must be determined by the governors in accordance with the Trust Deed of the school. The Church of England Diocese of Exeter and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Plymouth have welcomed the publication of this syllabus
The Diocese of Exeter recommends the use of the syllabus in its Church of England Schools. Roman Catholic schools use their own nationally approved programme for religious education but will find the syllabus a useful source of reference.
Schools in each of the three LEAs use this syllabus that has been developed collaboratively. The Plymouth Grid for Learning and the Torbay Grid for Learning are linked to this site.
The schemes of work produced as non-statutory guidance as part of this Agreed Syllabus can be downloaded from this site to be adapted for use in a school.

This information describes the many ways in which the Religious Education advisory team can support your school in all aspects of Religious Education. We can also offer advice on issues such as the spiritual, moral and cultural development of pupils, and in particular, ways in which RE can contribute, the nature of spirituality and all matters relating to collective worship
We aim to
- work in partnership with schools to promote excellence in Religious Education and high quality experiences in acts of collective worship for all pupils, and
- provide effective liaison between schools, SACRE and the faith communities of the region
Religious Education is the only subject which is locally determined and the RE team, as officers to SACRE, can provide expert advice on the LEA's Agreed Syllabus. We place all our advice in the context of local and national initiatives and developments.
We recognise the diverse needs of different groups of people involved in the provision of RE and collective worship. We aim to provide appropriate advice, support and training to meet the needs of pupils, parents, teachers, co-ordinators and heads of department, headteachers, governors and academic councils.
Our strategies are varied and we can negotiate the most appropriate style to meet your specific needs.
It may be through
- individual discussions with teachers,
- working with pupils and teachers in the classroom,
- training for all staff,
- leading staff meetings on a particular issue,
- working with parents or governors, or
- working with RE co-ordinators across the Academic Council.
