Huish Episcopi School
is the largest 11-16 school in Somerset, containing
around 1200 students. It has strong academic traditions
and is generally seen as highly successful. An area
where it is recognised that we need development
is in the field of multi-cultural education. Our
students live, largely, in rural Somerset and there
is a danger of rather narrow outlooks unless this
issue is addressed.
Me
I am a Head of English
aged 48, married with two grown up daughters. Prior
to my present post, I worked in three successive
Devon schools; Teign School, Dawlish School and
Lipson Community. I trained and worked originally
in Nottingham.
My own pass times,
apart from the obvious interest in all things literary,
include listening to music (particularly modern
and contemporary jazz), keeping fit (running, cycling,
swimming and gym work), travel and football (travelling
supporter of Sunderland AFC).
Why Crossings?
As a life long supporter
of Anti-Apartheid, I have an obvious interest in
current exciting developments. Further to comments
about my school (above), I am keen to introduce
to our students more elements of multi-cultural
education. This is particularly relevant in how
I can integrate examples of South African poetry
and maybe aspects of language - dialect etc.
Equally important is
what I might be able to give to colleagues and indirectly
students in SA from my knowledge, expertise or any
other relevant resource.
