There are 62 County Councillors (also known as Members) elected by those eligible to vote in elections which take place every four years. A recent announcement by Communities and Local Government confirmed that the date of the elections will move to 4 June 2009 to coincide with the dates of the European elections.
In addition, Devon is current waiting for the Boundary Committee recommendations on the future structures of Local Government within Devon. This expected by 31st December 2008, with final recommendations by the Secretary of State in February 2009. Please see our Boundary Committee Review pages for further information.
Each councillor represents the people within an area known as an 'Electoral Division'. Councillors have a number of distinct roles, namely:-
If you don't feel you are getting fair treatment then you may wish to contact your local County Councillor and ask him or her to take up the matter for you.
If you want to make a complaint about the conduct of a Devon County Councillor or if you think that a County Councillor may have breached the Code of Conduct then you may complain to the Council's standards Committee. Further details and complaints form.
