At the start of the 2011/2012 Academic year the Local Authority (LA) supported 359 Schools and 4 Pupil Referral Units for Admission purposes. There were 312 Primary Phase Schools, 36 Secondary Schools, 1 All-through School (3-19) and 10 Special Schools.

A number of these have become Academies, and with the exception of Admissions arrangements, are no longer the responsibility of the LA. Academies will have (Academy) in brackets in the School Name in order that they can be identified.
