Traffic Management
Intelligent Transport Systems
Promoted as the future tools for the management of road space. Some of the technology has been around for many years (variable message signs for car parks, CCTV), but new technologies and communications methods are being constantly developed. The Authority has developed an ITS strategy document (currently in draft), for the modernisation of the existing infrastructure and for the introduction of future systems.
One example of recently introduced ITS is real time bus information, providing 28 bus stop information signs within the City centre and on the radial routes.

Another example is interactive traffic signs. These have been introduced at several locations within the County. These signs are usually black, but activate when a vehicle approaches at speed. Normally there is an accident record associated with speed at the location, or a consistent speed problem.
