School Crossing Patrols

Devon County Council runs the School Crossing Patrol service and we escort around 4,000 children across busy roads every day. Recently, children and parents have been introduced to another way of walking to school called the 'Walking Bus'. This involves a rota of volunteer adults acting as 'drivers' and 'conductors' of an escorted walk to school. Walking improves physical fitness and health and many more people could turn the 'school run' into a school walk.

You can apply online for a school crossing patrol by selecting and completing the online Crossing Patrols form.

There are usually some vacancies for School Crossing Patrols. We also need to identify 'reserve' patrols who can volunteer to step in at short notice to cover for sickness.

Travel to school in Devon is safer than almost anywhere in Britain. In 1999 there were just 24 children ( 6%) who were injured while on the way to or from school, out of a total of around 64,000,000 journey miles. Lets keep it that way.

What can you do to help?

  • Consider putting you name down as a reserve School Crossing Patrol
  • When you're in a vehicle please be patient and courteous
  • If you see patrol flashing warning lights or a special lowered speed limit, please slow down
  • Consider helping set up or run a 'Walking Bus'
