think logoDevon can take credit for helping blaze a trail for modern, effective, road safety measures. Devon is a pioneer in:-

  • Traffic calming
  • The use of automatic speed detection cameras, with the police
  • Retraining courses for drink drive offenders, referred by magistrates
  • Retraining courses for crash offenders, offered by the police as an alternative to court

What other measures can be tried?

Devon has a Road Safety Plan. It has targets for further casualty reduction - this includes a halving of current levels of deaths and serious injuries. It also recognises the need to reduce danger.

The County Council alone will not do this. We have to work in partnership with the police and with the health authorities.

From 2001 onwards we are planning ;-

  • More programmes for the safety of children, particularly on the journey to school by foot or bicycle
  • More programmes to reduce anti-social speeds in towns and villages
  • Special measures crash 'hot-spots'
  • More attention to improving the attitudes and behaviour of young drivers
  • Improving bike safety
