Driving Safer For Longer
Road Fit Assessment

RoadFit is all about helping you cope safely, as a driver, through a time of difficulty with a health issue.
The scheme enables you to take a short driving session with a local, professional driving instructor which concludes with advice about your driving performance. You can then chat with your doctor about the best course of action to take to reduce the chance of problems occurring when you are behind the wheel.
How do I access the scheme?
Simple. You chat with your doctor about your concerns. You may have a health problem that you have noticed is making driving more difficult. Or you may feel unsafe following an operation or some event that has affected you emotionally. If you and your doctor feel that an observed drive would help you decide what to do, then a RoadFit session can be arranged for you.
You should contact us at Devon Drivers’ Centre (01392 444773) to request a RoadFit drive; your doctor will have supplied us with a note advising that he or she has recommended this. We will ask you for the usual contact details and, briefly, why your doctor has suggested you take a drive. We will pass your contact details on to one of our driving instructors who will get in touch to arrange a meeting. This will be at a time and place of your convenience (usually your home).
About the RoadFit drive
You will probably wish to use your own vehicle for the drive. If so, you will be asked to show your driving licence, certificate of insurance and, if applicable, your vehicle’s MoT certificate. You will also be asked to read a number plate at the required distance, as specified by the Highway Code. Please note that if you are unable to comply with these requirements, your instructor may not be able to conduct the drive. You and your instructor will then chat about your driving concerns. You will not need to give him details of your medical condition unless you want to. You will then set off and drive for approximately one hour. You will only be asked to drive on the sort of roads you normally use. This is not a test. It is an observed drive. At the end of the drive, the instructor will talk through points of your driving that seemed good, and any that gave concern. You may be given some tips about how to make yourself safer, including, if necessary, more driving sessions.
What happens after a RoadFit driving session
Your instructor will give you a confidential written report about your driving. You will also be given a copy to pass on to your doctor (or we can send it to your doctor for you). Next time you are at the surgery, you and your doctor can discuss what changes you need to make. There are many possible courses of action, depending on the report and your doctor’s judgement.
Your driving is fine, and you are coping safely.
You are advised to take a short break from driving.
Perhaps take some extra practical driving sessions.
The solution may be as simple as to change your driving patterns a bit. In some cases, the advice may be for you to consider changing from driving to other ways of getting around.
Rights and responsibilities
It is not the purpose of RoadFit to deal with anyone who has a medical condition that must be reported to DVLA . Your doctor will be aware of this list of conditions. The RoadFit instructor will not have any role regarding your driving licence. In rare cases where a driver’s condition is considered very dangerous, then he or she will be told and expected to pass this information to the doctor or DVLA.
Cost
The RoadFit drive and report will cost just £25. If you wish to arrange a RoadFit drive without consulting with your doctor, the cost is £27.50.
