Country Mile Project

Project Schemes

  1. Route treatments based on detailed studies incorporating human factors analysis. Creation of consistent communication of hazards with lining and signing, removal of unnecessary signage, new bend treatments, and introduction of perceptual measures.
  2. Co-ordinated enforcement strategies on routes, using a mix of covert roads policing , high visibility roads policing, deployment of mobile speed cameras, use of fixed and mobile Variable Message Sign technology..
  3. An intensive public education safety programme to address key issues emerging from data analysis. To include seat belt wearing, drink/drugs driving, and speeds. The programme will draw upon targeted data base marketing, use of media, an interactive web portal, and direct engagement with communities
  4. An intensive programme of driver and rider training for local businesses, older drivers, drivers and riders at high risk, and foreign drivers unfamiliar with British roads.
  5. Experimental terminal signing for a ‘green speed’ rural zone. To include some removal of signage and markings and enhance the roads’ purpose as one for shared use rather than just a carriageway.
  6. A rural village safety initiative where residents’ concerns will be addressed
  7. An awareness programme for young drivers, especially those at risk of offending or re-offending.

These measures are in addition to the existing programmes of work that take place all across Devon, and which have contributed to Devon having the best record in reducing KSIs of all counties in the South West(2006).
