Vehicle Crossings or Dropped Kerbs

If you wish to build or widen a dropped crossing over a pavement in order to park your vehicle on your property, you may need planning permission from your  Local District/City Council  Please check with them first as you will be asked to provide a letter from the District Council with your application.

You must get agreement from Devon County Council before you do anything on the highway. Digging in the footpath or road, without lawful authority is an offence under the Highways Act and may result in prosecution.

How much will it cost?

The cost will depend upon the amount of work involved however, a typical cost of constructing a vehicular crossing 5m wide x 2m deep is £1000.  This does not include any adjustments necessary to utilities apparatus or street furniture (street lights, covers or boxes).  Prices will reflect any additional works on an individual site basis.

You have the choice of asking Devon County Council provide a quote, or can ask your own contractor.  However, your own contractor must be approved by Devon County Council to work on the highway.

If you accept the quote from Devon County Council, our contractors will contact you within 6 weeks to arange to carry out the work.

If you do not accept the quote from Devon County Council or choose to use your own contractor, they must have the necessary acccreditation and be approved by Devon County Council.

All crossings must be built in accordance with the Specification image - PDF icon (24KB - pdf help) although there may be occasions when a more substantial construction is required and you will be advised of this when you apply.

You must not attempt to carry out this work yourself, you must use an approved contractor.

A non-refundable fee of £90.00 is required to cover the Council's costs for processing your application and inspecting the site.  A cheque for this amount, made payable to Devon County Council, should be included with the completed application form.  If you employ your own approved contractor to carry out the work, there will be additional inspection costs of £110.

When you are ready to start the process, please print off and complete the application form and post it to your nearest Area Office who will then be in contact with you to complete the application process.
