Wheels to Work
Wheels to Work is a term used to describe schemes which provide transport solutions to individuals who are experiencing difficulties in accessing training, employment and/or educational opportunities, due to lack of suitable public or private transport.
The schemes can be particularly important for people living in isolated rural communities.
Devon Wheels 2 Work was launched in April 2007 and has been formed from the merger of the successful Wheels 2 Work projects in Holsworthy, Honiton and Tavistock. The service has been expanded to cover the whole of the county and is now available to people between the ages of 16 and 65.
Devon Wheels 2 Work is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) which loans scooters to individuals living in Devon who find it difficult to get to work because they do not have access to private or public transport. Loans last for a period of three months. Individuals must pay a weekly contribution and have a plan to obtain their own transport at the end of the loan period.
Individuals must attend a Compulsory Basic Training course and complete it to a nationally recognised standard. They must also keep the bike in good condition and attend regular safety checks.
Since the launch the project has expanded its fleet of bikes in order to help as many people as possible across the county to access training and employment opportunities.
